PAST PRESENT FUTURE 005
Been dreaming of cool breeze, falling leaves, and apple trees recently?
These stereotypical ‘autumn’ elements may feel out of reach in the midst of our tropical paradise. Luckily, through music, movies, and sheer sweat-your-heart-out-in-that-jacket determination, Miamians find a way to make do.
Here for your seasonal audio fix is a tracklist handcrafted by the music lovers here at WVUM 90.5 FM. We asked the WVUM Music Staff and some of our favorite college radio supporters about the tracks and albums that reminded them of the fall season, and compiled their thoughts here.
Steep some tea, or whatever fall beverage you please, and sit back with some of our favorite songs. Let your ears take you somewhere your body can’t.
BANGS N BRACES, iKEDA – ALBUM
“She’s making up a lot of what I have on my USB for DJ practice right now. Very fun artist that I'm glad to see is getting her flowers. She opened for Pink Pantheress and is also collaborating with a lot of smaller artists, like Babymorocco. Really fun music, reminds me of MIA and Santigold, but more of, like, an electronic vibe.”
WILD SIGN, I CHOOSE YOU, REAL LIES – TRACK
“Considering this is my last semester this song feels particularly relevant. It has an attitude about keeping a young state of mind throughout life which is especially important to me now, as you transition into this new stage of life.”

GENERATIONAL WEALTH, RUSTLER — ALBUM
“Rustler’s debut record ‘Generational Wealth’ holds songs that are unrelenting, an uncertain, earnest voice answered by a bouncing, rushing musical atmosphere. It is rich in a certain lyricism, musicality, and emotion that embodies the tumultuous unfolding of a subduing fall day.”
STORM II, YUNG LEAN – TRACK
“After the VMA performance… wow. In terms of the soundscape it gave me a really fall vibe, I associate Yung Lean with a grittiness that I also associate with the fall. Especially with the whole schoolboy aesthetic it leans into the academic vibe and getting through the semester.”
GRAND THEFT AUTUMN, FALL OUT BOY – ALBUM
“That old kind of pop-rock, pop-punk vibe always feels very fall to me. I think it's the nostalgia bit of it. Fall starts and you start entering that seasonal depression and when I’m in that state that's all the music I want to listen to, like I'm sooo emo I'm sooo in my feelings…”
I ONLY HAVE EYES FOR YOU, THE FLAMINGOES – TRACK
“It’s, like, not fully somber, it has more of an upbeat feel to it, it’s more of the happier parts of fall.
You're entering that point of the year where it's kind of nostalgic, there’s the warmth and what you look forward to in fall. It's like the romanticization of fall; it just makes me feel so giddy.”
MILO GREENE, MILO GREENE — ALBUM
“Dreamy, eerie, fantastical millennial-core album that is just perfect for the season. Try out ‘What’s the Matter’ and ‘1957,’ they actually changed my life. Perfect for a walk in damp leaves or late night cooking with only the stovelight on.”
OXTAILS, SWAPMEET — EP
“Swapmeet’s debut EP ‘Oxtails’ parallels the mental recollection that comes with entering fall; A collage of where they are now and where they began, the record is a collection of songs that spans all three years of the band’s history.
Namely the opening tracks ‘Slaughter’ and ‘Ceiling Fan’ off the two records depict the sentiment of a year approaching completion and the sensation of the unfamiliar months to come, a perfect crescendo of emotions. These artists have crafted an ode to a stroll in a season changing, and in them you will find honesty, comfort, and something to be thankful for.”
BONUS DOUBLE FEATURE!

EARLY SUNSETS OVER MONROEVILLE, MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE – TRACK
“Iit just has a kind of gritty feel to it. Autumn for me falls into two categories– there's the warmth, the album art has the warm colors, but with fall everything gets colder, and the sounds and lyrics give me that sensation. It's not necessarily a rough song, it’s more solemn, and it makes me feel like wind is blowing and leaves are falling and a sense of entering fall.”
“Always been a fall song, makes me want to put on a military coat and walk around downtown Miami with a breeze behind my back.”
