“Young Latin & Proud” is a specialty show hosted by Cinthya Franco and WVUM’s Graphic Designer, Ale Moros, every other Tuesday, 1pm-2pm!  Read on to hear more about this WVUM exclusive show.

What is the inspiration for “Young Latin & Proud”?

Cinthya: Ale and I met at a Halloween party in 2018 through our mutual friend Steph. We started talking about music and I asked her if she’d listened to Helado Negro (my all-time favorite artist) and immediately recommended her a song (Transmission Listen). Being from Ecuador and Ale from Venezuela, we are still very much attached to our roots and spanish music. We share a lot of similarities in music and thought it would be good to start a show to feature Latin American artists that often are not featured on the radio.

Ale: We named the show Young, Latin & Proud after the Helado Negro song by the same name since we thought it was fitting, and we went to his show together at The Ground in 2019 and it was such a great full circle moment.

Favorite artists featured on the show?

A: My favorite artists to play are definitely Nicola Cruz, iLe, Devendra Banhart, Mima, Sotomayor, and anyone who knows me knows I play Maye’s “Tú” any chance I get.
C: Definitely all those too… and we often play Da Pawn, Chancha Via Circuito, and The Change. And Helado Negro, of course.

How long has this show been on air?:

C & A: Since February 2020, so for a year now!

Favorite show memory?

C: Probably the first time we were on air. We were super nervous and overthinking everything and barely talked beyond song name/artist/etc...Another one is that we have mispronounced so many things on air. We use a lot of spanglish and sometimes it can get confusing switching into words, so we have definitely made some mistakes that we still make fun of today.

A: Yea, definitely that, I once mean to say “Limon Pelado de Nicola Cruz” and accidentally said limon peludo instead, and I still laugh every time Cinthya reminds me of that... On a more wholesome note, a listener once uploaded a super long video to her story about how much she enjoys listening to our show and how personal it feels to listen to us speaking spanglish and talking about artists she loves, so that was definitely a huge highlight that encouraged us to keep this going (since it’s so hard to listen to your own voice on air lol).

What do you love most about WVUM?

C: The people for sure!
A: Yea, my experience at UM would be suuuuper different if it weren’t for the station.

Listen to the show every other Tuesday, 1-2pm on 90.5 fm wvum.org/listen !
