I Made That Viral Dalgona "TikTok" Coffee

I’ll admit it. I am proudly addicted to coffee…. and not-so-proudly addicted to TikTok.… But when those two things collided in the viral “whipped coffee” trend, I immediately wanted to try. Though the virality of this drink makes it appear to be new and flashy, the coffee has actually been around for a while, the whipped nature of it being made into different sweet treats and such.

The coffee is composed of three ingredients (four if you count milk): Instant coffee, hot water, and sugar, all in a 1:1:1 ratio. Much to my delight, my mother dug an unopened package of instant coffee out of the depths of our tea cabinet, and I began whisking as soon as possible.

I began by mixing 4 tbsp of each ingredient into a bowl, for if I was going to make this, I was going to make a lot! I also refused to use an electronic hand mixer, as I wanted to test the “400 whisks” theory, in which the classic process of dalgona is said to take 400 perfect whisks to make it fluffy and meringue like. However, I realized about 20-30 minutes into my vigorous mixing that I should probably transfer my mixture over to a bigger bowl in order to incorporate air… but still, I was reluctant. Finally, after maybe an HOUR of attempting to whisk it in my puny bowl, I moved to a large mixing bowl. And soon, right before my eyes, I watched my sad, dark mixture transform into a fluffy and air-filled dollop that resembled peanut butter. I was so proud. I barraged by instagram stories with videos of it. I paraded around the house, showing my sister and mother what. I had completed.

Finally, I tasted a spoonful. Oh my god. It was so sharply saccharine, but balanced out with the dark roast flavor of the overwork coffee. It tasted like the most fresh and rich colada (I miss you, Vicky’s). I loved it! Now was time to put it over ice and oat milk!!

It was so creamy and satisfying, and worth the many painstaking minutes of whisking (after all, literally what else am I going to do with all of this quarantine time?).

I could see myself making this quite frequently, perhaps stooping to the level of using an electric hand mixer every so often.

Overall, this easy but time consuming coffee drink was very yummy, very sweet, and very very caffeinated. I recommend you try this out if you have the ingredients laying around your house, and let me know if you do!!!
