Sunday February 12th @6pm.
This week on RadioActive I was joined by PhD students Christina Douyon and Jonathan Sepulveda from the Institute for the Study and Promotion of Race and Culture out of Boston College. These days, conversations abound about privilege across race, gender, biological sex, ability, religion, age, etc., Dr. Janet Helms, director of the Institute has constructed the theory of “White Heterosexual Male Privilege” and is highlighting the role this set of privileges played in the election of Trump.
Christina and Jonathan outlined Dr. Helms theory, explained privilege, whiteness, maleness and hetero’ness’ along with how the separate injustices we fight in our communities (racism, sexism, xenophobia, etc.) are symptoms of this root cause. By re-framing how we understand the problem/cause we might reframe how we engage in resistance and social change.
We spent the hour discussing not only the theory put forward by Dr. Helms, but also how it plays out in everyday life. How decisions and relationships and interactions are impacted by privilege and what we can do in our own lives to resist.
