The Magic of iMordecai

Local Miami film director Marvin Samel has written and directed a film that serves as a heartfelt tribute to his family and beloved hometown. iMordecai tells the story of a Holocaust survivor who begins to feel young again when he learns how to use an iPhone. Based on Samel’s own life, the film is an intimate look at the importance of family through an honest portrayal of Samel’s own bond with his real life father, Mordecai.

Established actors Sean Astin and Judd Hirsch have terrific chemistry in the movie, perfectly capturing Mordecai and Marvin’s nuanced father-son dynamic. And breakout star Azia Dinea Hale shines in this film, delivering a fantastic performance as a charming and compassionate tech store worker named Nina who offers to teach a reluctant Mordecai how to use the iPhone gifted to him by his son. Soon enough, Mordecai and Nina become friends and are both profoundly impacted by each other’s characters.

The film is, at its heart and soul, not only a love letter to family, but a love letter to the city of Miami. From the Wynwood Walls to the performances at Tea and Poets, iMordecai pays homage to everything that makes this city special, and highlights many of the places that Miami natives hold close to their heart.

I spoke with Azia Dinea Hale and Marvin Samel about their experiences filming the movie and why it was important to highlight Miami in such a prominent way.
